uhuhuhu…now what are you expecting to find up here, hmmmm?

Mostly facts about me

What can you call me? (click to see)
You can refer to me directly by my handles if we're interacting in a space where I'm using them:
    Sharkaeopteryx, @Sharksonaplane
If you are crediting me or introducing me in a formal/semi-formal context:
  • Use whatever name I signed up for or credited myself as. This is usually Sharyna or Sharyna Tran, but may also be one of my handles, or Shark, or in cases involving my offline business, nothing at all
    Nicknames:
  • Shark: yes, for all who interact
  • Shar: yes, as abbreviation for Sharyna, for all who interact (pronounced like shark w/o the k)
  • Sharkae: yes, on Twitch or affiliated spaces like Guilded servers (please do NOT change to this if you usually use one of the above) (preferably pronounced shark-ay but shark-ee is fine too)
  • Sharky: not offended but not preferred, please don't start if you weren't already doing it (no it does not count if you "were doing it in your head before you saw this")
  • Shary: only if you used to call me this on Sandwich/affiliated spaces, otherwise no thank you
  • [my offline name]: do not call me this in online spaces unless I specifically ask you to do so, i.e. if in an environment with people I know offline, you should still call me Shark unless I ask you not to

What are my pronouns? She/her!

What's my whole, like, deal? (click to see)
  • I'm an adult Vietnamese cis female person living in Virginia, USA
  • I love cooking and eating different foods, teaching and learning different languages, and contemplating and reshaping different ways to live with adult ADHD. None of those are my day job though.

What languages do I speak? (click to see) (warning: long) I always feel awkward answering this in the moment because people usually aren't looking for the detailed response, yet I almost never know what they're really asking so I can't really give a short answer, and I always worry that asking "well what do you mean by 'speak'" sounds pretentious/self-centered 😅

It's worse because it's usually a question in like a casual conversation that isn't among people who speak multiple languages, so then I fret about unintentionally monopolizing the conversation and making people think I want to make it all about me. I don't, but I also want to give a complete answer, so I always end up doing a lot of mental hemming and hawing to decide how much to say.

Also, a lot of people are Weird about languages, both when talking about them and asking about them, whether they speak one language or many. Let's just say, I call myself (and ask that others call me) multilingual rather than a polyglot, and that's for a reason.

  • In addition to English, I would call myself functionally fluent in: Vietnamese, Spanish
  • I understand between 85% and 65% of this when I come across it depending on the day and the context (usually closer to 85% but sometimes the brain just doesn't want to brain!), but I'd be able to get by a lot better after maybe a week or two of immersion in (but would still stumble on complex vocab or grammar): French, Brazilian Portuguese, Mandarin (spoken/listening)
  • I have previously learned this and how the language works so I can make educated guesses and remember certain phrases or structures but would need significant increase in vocabulary and a grammar review to be functional in: Simplified Chinese (reading/writing), Catalan, Russian, Turkish, Italian, German
  • Basic weeb level i.e. pronunciation, key words/phrases in specific contexts, if reading/writing is included then ability to read the words if not understand them: Korean (spoken/listening), Japanese (spoken/listening), Arabic (spoken/reading, not a typo), Hindi (spoken/listening), Urdu (spoken/listening)
  • I've spent time learning but haven't retained enough yet to fit elsewhere: ASL (currently learning), Dari (spoken/listening), Korean (reading/writing), kiSwahili, Traditional Chinese (reading/writing)
  • I also specifically know a lot of food/ingredient/color terms in other languages because I love food so I can tell you what is in this dish you're about to order or what these spices are but I would not claim to speak it: Amharic (romanized), Bengali (romanized), a bunch of others.

Like with coding, the more you know, the easier it is to learn something new, so I can pattern-recognize in a bunch of languages related to the ones above, and I do enjoy making connections like that, though it's always important to be careful of making connections that don't exist. You know, parse-a-social relationships 8D
